Sources cited in a Bloomberg report suggest that Apple is in advanced talks with OpenAI to explore deeper integration of generative AI technologies into iOS.

However, earlier reports suggest that Apple is also exploring options with Google as a potential cloud partner.

Apple artificial intelligence

In recent years, Apple’s aspirations in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) seem to have waned. While the company’s initially secretive approach to AI development hinted at potential innovations, as of 2024, its flagship product, the iPhone, is beginning to demonstrate signs of falling behind its competitors who prioritize AI advancements.

The transition from internal innovation to external collaborations became apparent in May of 2022 when Ian Goodfellow, renowned as the “GANfather” for his groundbreaking work in AI, departed from his role as director of machine learning at Apple. His departure was reportedly linked to disagreements over Apple’s return-to-office policy.

Generative AI

Since Goodfellow’s departure, Apple has remained active in the AI sector. The company has recently unveiled eight open-source large language models, accompanied by code and training logs. While this demonstrates a sustained commitment to AI and machine learning, it’s doubtful that any of the released models could rival closed models like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini in terms of competitiveness.

Market capitalization

Market capitalization refers to the total value of a company’s outstanding shares of stock in the stock market. It is calculated by multiplying the current market price of a company’s stock by the total number of outstanding shares. Market capitalization is used to measure the size and relative value of a company in the stock market, and it is often considered a key indicator of a company’s overall worth.

It’s conceivable that Apple is working to solidify its generative AI partnerships ahead of its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June.

WWDC serves as the platform for unveiling the company’s most significant and impactful products, and thus far, 2024 has been relatively subdued for Apple.

In contrast, Apple’s primary competitor, Microsoft, has experienced immense financial success since partnering with AI industry leader OpenAI. Presently, Microsoft holds a commanding position as the world’s most valuable company by market capitalization, with a total value of $3.019 trillion, surpassing Apple’s second-place position of $2.614 trillion.
