Over the past 50 years, the world has become a much safer place for infants. Back in 1974, one in 10 newborns didn’t make it to their first birthday. But by 2021, that heartbreaking statistic had dropped by over two-thirds.
Many factors played a role in this positive change: reduced poverty, improved nutrition, cleaner air and water, and better access to antibiotics and treatments. However, a recent study from the World Health Organization (WHO) highlights that vaccines were one of the biggest contributors to this decline in infant mortality.
According to the research led by WHO epidemiologist Naor Bar-Zeev, vaccines alone accounted for a staggering 40 percent of the decrease in infant mortality since 1974. In the past five decades, vaccines prevented a whopping 154 million deaths worldwide. And out of those lives saved, 146 million were children under the age of 5, including 101 million infants.

These vaccines have had a profound impact, giving the beneficiaries an additional 9 billion years of life collectively. This study, commissioned on the 50th anniversary of the WHO’s Expanded Programme on Immunization, covers a crucial period. It began shortly after the launch of the program in 1974, building on the success of eradicating smallpox.
Over the years, vaccination efforts led by WHO and organizations like Gavi have made remarkable progress. In sub-Saharan Africa alone, significant percentages of infants received essential vaccines in 2021, such as the measles, tuberculosis, hepatitis B, polio, and diphtheria/tetanus/pertussis vaccines.
Among all vaccines, the measles vaccine stands out for its monumental impact. It prevented a staggering 93.7 million deaths since 1974, making it the most effective vaccine in terms of lives saved. Other vaccines like tetanus, pertussis, and tuberculosis also made significant contributions but pale in comparison to the measles vaccine.

However, despite these successes, challenges remain. The recent decline in vaccination rates, especially among certain groups, poses risks. In the US, for instance, some adults, particularly Republicans, have become more hesitant about childhood vaccinations, partly due to the polarized discussions around Covid-19 vaccines.
In light of these challenges, it’s crucial to recognize the historic role vaccines have played in saving lives and preventing suffering. Looking ahead, it’s vital to continue efforts to develop and distribute vaccines for diseases like malaria and tuberculosis, knowing the transformative impact they can have.
The study utilized a comprehensive approach, combining data on mortality rates, vaccine coverage, and disease spread models. Although some gaps existed in the data, particularly regarding vaccine coverage before 1980, sensitivity analyses confirmed the robustness of the findings.
In conclusion,
vaccines have been a game-changer in global health, saving countless lives and preventing immeasurable suffering. As we navigate through current challenges, let’s not forget the tremendous benefits that immunization has brought us over the past half-century—a truly miraculous achievement.
